Meet Your Instructor

James Ashby, Instructor

James Ashby is an eight year veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. In the U.S. Navy, he participated in multiple Naval Air Wing operations including four months in the Persian Gulf. As a soldier in the U.S. Army he took on a much different role working with Military Intelligence. A long time student of the martial arts, he became interested in defensive shooting in 2001. In 2006, he discovered the benefits of the Combat Focus Shooting program. “It answered questions and confirmed doubts that some of my previous training left behind,” said James. In 2009, James certified as a Combat Focus Shooting instructor and is dedicated to the tenants of Efficiency, Consistency and Integrity.

My Goals As An Instructor

  • To train you away from me. Ultimately, there is only one “most efficient” way to do anything. There are a finite number of skills you need to be able to defend yourself in the plausible situations you may face. After being introduced to how those skills are developed in context, you then only need to practice. Continuing education can then focus on the Why and any changes in the science that may have been discovered.
  • To instruct students in safe gun handling, an efficient response to the worst case scenario and inspire the continuation of skill development
  • To continue my own personal development.

What I Want For My Students

  • I want you to be safe and to handle firearms Safely and Responsibly
  • I want you to continue to raise your personal level of skill/ competency within the context of Defensive Shooting
  • I want you to develop a critical eye for learning about defensive shooting. I want you to be able to take a course in a subject or method you are not familiar with and be able to evaluate it for efficiency, consistency and integrity for the circumstances under which you may be shooting.

I want you to be able to Perceive things the way a professional would, to Recognize a potential or actual defensive situation as quickly as possible and execute an Appropriate Skillful Response as efficiently as you are able.
